Don’t forget about LinkedIn

February 8, 2011

You’ve got your blog, Twitter and Facebook accounts… make sure you have a LinkedIn and you keep it up to date!

Lately I’m noticing more and more engagement within the platform, such as updating of statuses, commenting and posting.

LinkedIn is a professional, career-centric network but it’s not just for promoting yourself as a prospective job candidate or keeping in touch with former colleagues. Creating new, relevant connections is a great benefit from using LinkedIn, joining groups and browsing common connections is a good way to start.

Here are my top five tips for using LinkedIn:

1. Upload a profile picture. Otherwise you’re just boring. But seriously, when using a platform where building relationships is key, you should humanise your profile with a picture, just as you would Facebook or Twitter. But the picture should be of yourself – not your dog or a sunset – because this tool really is just about YOU.

2. Join groups. Creating new, relevant connections is a great benefit of using LinkedIn & this is a great place to start. Groups also stimulate great debate and conversations, a fantastic way of staying in the loop within your industry or area of interest.

3. Link you blog, but think twice about linking Facebook and Twitter accounts. Promote yourself professionally, but be aware that photos from your drunken weekend antics and personal tweets may not project the image you wish.

4. Don’t use your job title as your headline. Sell yourself and your capabilities by expanding here. If your job title is Marketing Manager for a clothing line, your headline might be ‘Marketing professional within the fashion retail sector. Extensive experience in new product development and specialises in e-tail”.

5. Seek and provide recommendations. One of the best things about LinkedIn is the recommend feature – it completes the CV of your profile but providing what are essentially referees.

Finally, keep your profile up-to-date!
