10 DVD Easter Eggs for Easter

A Faberge Easter Egg

A Faberge Easter Egg

Perhaps I am really behind the times, or at least maybe I am just a nerd-wannabe and not quite there yet, but I only just recently heard the term ‘easter egg’ used in a sense that didn’t refer to chocolate.

For anyone else who doesn’t know what an easter egg is in the technological sense, that is, not made by Cadbury or Red Tulip, an easter egg is essentially a hidden feature in a DVD, game or video. The term is said to have been derived from the late 1800s when the Russian imperial family commissioned Carl Fabergé to design lavish, bejeweled eggs to be exchanged at Easter. These eggs had secret compartments where a bonus gift could be found.

So in the spirit of Easter, I’ve gone on an easter egg hunt and come up with a few for you.

1. Star Wars

Apparently George Lucas is a big one for easter eggs. Typing in 1138 (in reference to the title of Lucas’ first feature THX 1138) will unlock certain features. For Episodes I and II, you get outtakes and gags and on Revenge of the Sith, instead of outtakes you get a hip-hop Yoda. To access these go to the OPTIONS menu from the MAIN menu, press 11 – wait – press 3 – wait – press 8, and it should unlock the DVD credits with outtakes. For the Star Wars Trilogy, go to VIDEO GAME & STILL GALLERIES, then press 11 – wait – press 3 – wait – press 8.

2. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Special Extended DVD Edition)

To see a hidden feature, introduced by Peter Jackson, in which Gollum accepts an award for the MTV Award for Best Virtual Performance, insert disc one, go to SCENE SELECTION, and highlight CHAPTER 30. From there, press DOWN, then press ENTER. The computer generated Gollum gives a funny, and naughty, performance.

3. The Matrix

You can view a documentary feature which details the process of artwork to computer generated special effects by going to SPECIAL FEATURES, select CAST AND CREW, then select the WACHOWSKI BROTHERS. On this page there’s a small red pill, highlight it and press ENTER.

4. Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

For those of you who have seen this film you will know about how delicious that Turkish Delight is.
If you put in Disk 2 of the Collector’s Edition, choose Creating Narnia from MAIN MENU. Select Evolution of an Epic. Scroll down and to the left to a folding director’s chair. Highlight a golden symbol on the back of the chair and ENTER to see a sequence about the Turkish Delight.

5. Fight Club

If you have the Fight Club DVD (as I do) then pop it in your DVD player and check out this humourous WARNING message that appears before the start of the movie. Most people won’t read it as it looks like a real warning.

“If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second of your life. Don’t you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can’t think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all who claim it? Do you read everything you’re supposed to read? Do you think everything you’re supposed to think? Buy what you’re told you should want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you’re alive. If you don’t claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned…….Tyler. ”

6. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Want to see an alternate ending? Then highlight the ‘Special Features’ selection from the Main Menu then press UP , DOWN, RIGHT and LEFT. I don’t have this DVD so I can’t confirm that this one works but check it out!

7. Desperate Housewives: Season One Boxset

The best thing about Season One is Jesse Metcalfe, also known as the hot gardener.
To see a comical segment on the controversy surround his butt cheek, insert disc and ENTER Main Menu, ENTER Bonus Features, HIGHLIGHT “Deleted Scenes”, Press Up Once.
There is a key shaped object hidden in the grey area between the text and Lynette, Press ENTER.

8. The Illusionist

Want to learn some magic tricks?
Go to the MAIN MENU of the disk, HIGHLIGHT the Play option, press the LEFT ARROW on the remote ONCE. A butterfly should now be highlighted in the top right hand corner of the mirror on the main menu. Press ENTER to play and you will find a selection of magic tricks for you to try!

9. Priscilla Queen of the Desert

To see a history timeline detailing the history of drag entertainment, hit the MAIN MENU,  underline scene selection or special features, then hit the DOWN ARROW. There will be a star symbol above the menu list. Hit ENTER to select the star. This will bring up the drag timeline!

10. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Special Edition)

Well this one really is a special treat and that is why I have saved the best for last.
Pop Disk 2 into your player and click on ‘Cast and Crew Filmographies’. Select ‘Jason Mewes’. When his filmography pops up, the word ‘Balls’ will appear to the top of the screen. Press ENTER here and you will be lucky enough to experience a clip of Jay and his… well… balls.

And there you go! That’s my Easter Eggs for you this year! Hope you all had a great Easter.
