So YouTube is just a place to upload videos and watch other people’s? Wrong.

YouTube for a growing number of people is now becoming a source of income.

23-year-old Sydney university student Natalie Tran is one such entrepreneur, whose YouTube site Community Channel earns her thousands of dollars per month from the advertising that runs alongside her videos. Community Channel is the most subsrcribed YouTube site in Australia and her video ‘How to fake a six-pack’ is the 8th most watched video on YouTube (Australia) with over 20 million views.
Natalie uploads videos 2 or 3 times per week and most are observational videos, such as her video on Google Street Maps.

The most successful YouTube video in Australia to date is the ‘Free Hugs Campaign’ with a whopping 57 million views. The clip was filmed in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall and features a man walking with a sign that reads ‘Free Hugs’ and hugging random strangers.

Another humourous video is the debut live performance by Bangs, the Hip-Hop superstar from Footscray, who performed at the Prince of Wales Hotel on October 30 last year.

Next month YouTube celebrates its fifth anniversary, going from its first video (an 18 second clip from San Diego Zoo) to now 24 hours of film being uploaded every minute. The most popular video of all time has now had 170 million views, and is of a baby biting his brother’s finger.

So if you’re looking for another way to make cash and you think you have what it takes to be a YouTube star, why not give it a shot.
