Sydney strips off for Spencer Tunick

March 1, 2010

Just after sunrise this morning, an estimated 5,200 people stripped down to nothing just outside Sydney’s Opera House to be a part of Spencer Tunick’s latest installation titled ‘Mardi Gras: The Base’.

Tunick’s previous works have included nude installations in Mexico City’s principle square where 18,000 took part in 2007 (breaking his previous record of 7,000 in Barcelona), on the Aletsch Glacier where 600 took part in an effort to raise greater global warming awareness, and in the grounds of Blarney Castle, County Cork.

Sydney volunteers came from all walks of life with a diverse range of ages, nationalities and sexual orientations. The installation, which was commissioned by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras aimed to ’emphasize and celebrate the sameness of individuals – regardless of their sexual preferences’.

Even Sunrise’s Grant Denyer dropped his dacks for the event! Warning: Contains a very naked Grant!
